Rudi Enos is a engineer with more than 30 years experience in design. See http://www.rudienosdesign.com/. In any modern project there is always a team who collaborate to provide the specialities required. In particular, Rudi has worked with Bruno Postle on most major projects. See www.bruno.postle.net. They have both worked extensively with Stuart Holdsworth, now with SSL/NRM Consultants. See http://www.nrm-consultants.co.uk/. Rudi has of course worked with many other fine engineers, designers and architects on different projects.
In addition to product design, Rudi has proved himself one of the most versatile designers ever to work in the event business. His structures have travelled the world, in fact to almost every continent. If you include music venue design, entertainment licensing, hospitality venue design, rigging, trussing, and indoor exhibition design, you begin to understand the depth of his experience.
In 1989 Rudi designed the mobile hospitality unit 'The Royale', for British Aerospace, which received the IFAI 'Outstanding Achievement' award. He has also designed some of the most significant portable structures the world has ever seen. Principally the Valhalla (Tensile 1) which is believed to be the largest portable structure available for hire in the world. In 1999 the Valhalla was a awarded a 'Guinness World Record'.
Rudi has been the technical advisor for UK trade associations (MUTA - The Made Up Textiles Association and TESA - The Event Suppliers Association, and the Corporate Hospitality Association) and the UK representative on the British Standards Institute CEN TC 152 (temporary structures) European Standards subcommittee. In addition to the standards work, Rudi has also acted as expert witness, as a loss adjuster on claims, and as a stock assessor.
Rudi has also written two books; The Enos Guide to the Operation of Temporary Structures, and The Book of Tents. Rudi's career as a design engineer has resulted in many different creations. These can be roughly split into two areas; product design and special structures. He has also been the driving force for many extraordinary projects in the last 25 years, only the most significant of which are shown here.
PROJECTS
The projects can be broken down into three main areas; architectural projects, world class events, and bespoke design and build of special structures.
Architectural Projects
Rudi has been instrumental in many projects in construction and architectural design. In some of these projects he has acted as the architect, in others the engineer. In some cases, which are not shown in this document, Rudi has acted as an external consultant, such as the 'Black Hole' at Alton Towers, and the Alexandra Pavilion in London. As a rough guide, his involvement with many of the following projects was significant and in others, they simply wouldn't have happened without his direct involvement.

Music - Venue Design
Touring venues in temporary structures have come along way in the last 20 years and Rudi has contributed in many ways to this development. Movement techniques, mechanical handling, motor, controls, and a vast leap in temporary anchor development have resulted in structures which are inherently safer, stronger and more economical to move as a result of his involvement. The increase in the use of suspended loads in temporary venues has also increased by a large factor, for instance on one installation, one of Rudi's structures had a total of 44,000 kilograms (90,000 pounds) suspended from the structure.

PRODUCT DESIGN
Rudi has created many different products in his career. He sold his first design in the 1960's while still a teenager. Since then, there have been many others. The significant designs can be broken down into two areas;
Specialist Product Design
A safety system for machine tool chucks. This simple system prevents the chuck key flying away from the machine if the chuck key is inadvertently left in the chuck and the machine is started. Client ICI - Imperial Chemical Industries.
A wind out commercial awning system with drop forged components and built in wind-lock. Average unit price, £1,200. Client: MITCO/DEANS.
The 'Sealtite' commercial awning system.
This became the market leader in the 1980's and many thousands have now been built at an average unit price of over £2,000. The awning system used mass production components Client: SUNART/DEANS.
The 'CarbonTruss' composite trussing system.
This invention is known as CarbonTruss and marketed as the 'Space Structures' system. CarbonTruss provides a trussing system both for temporary structures such as industrial access platforms and other portable structures, and for major permanent structural use that my be application specific. The system gives the benefit of a collection of components which are modular, 'off the shelf' with standard design rules, lighter than any system of comparable cost, and suitable for non-conducting, non corrosive and low maintenance applications. Yet it is relatively cheap due to economic mass production rather than manual lay-up. The system is sold directly and through licensing to manufacturers in specific markets. The product provides the solution of modular systems for construction of space frame structural members which overcome the current trade off between weight, strength, stiffness and cost.
STRUCTURE PRODUCTS
Rudi is perhaps best known for his large span portable structures.
The Moonburst hospitality marquee.
The Kayam theatre tent
The Valhalla, worlds largest portable structure. (Also known as Tensile 1)
The RED stack range of demountable grandstand seating.
The Accordion deployable seat and floor systems.
The CarbonSpan composite plastic trussing system.
The Matrix modular marquee system.
